Recent Victims of Abductions, Mutilations and Murders

According to Aurat Foundation, a non-governmental organization working for women empowerment in Pakistan, between January and June 2009, a total of 4,514 incidents of violence against women were reported. However closely a woman tries to conform to social norms, she lives in fear of attack. It can come at any time, from the men closest to her. She faces death by shooting, burning or slaughter with axes – just for being suspected of having shamed her family in some way. She can be killed for having a supposed illicit relationship, for attempting to marry a man of her choice, or for divorcing an abusive husband. Most of the times, “honor” is just an an excuse for a cold-blooded murder.

An activist and council member of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Amarnath Motumal, stated that at least 20 to 25 girls are abducted and converted to Islam against their will every single month. Motumal further stated that this number is lower than the actual numbers because many cases go unreported due to fear of families and loved ones being killed.
